NEC glossary
The terms that matter, in plain English, each with a link to a fuller guide. NEC capitalises its defined terms because they have a specific meaning, so it pays to know what they are.
Good to know
Are these the contract definitions?
No. They are our own explanations. The contract defines its terms itself, mostly in clause 11, so check your own contract for the precise meaning.
Do terms differ between editions?
Yes. NEC3 says Employer and Works Information. NEC4 says Client and Scope. Other forms have their own terms too, such as Consultant, Service Manager and Purchaser.
General information in our own words, not legal advice. Your own contract decides.
Contract Status works out these dates and references for you on every contract, with your own periods and clauses. See the guided tour.
